Remembering Pastor-Founder Rev. S.B.J. Oshoffa: A Life of Divine Purpose

On the 29th of September, 1947, in Porto-Novo, Dahomey (now the Republic of Benin), a carpenter named Samuel Bilewu Joseph Oshoffa received a divine call that would change the course of Christian worship in Africa and beyond.
While working deep in the forest, Oshoffa encountered a divine vision and heard the voice of God calling him to establish a church — a holy church from heaven. He was instructed in the ways of worship, the use of spiritual items such as holy water, incense, and candles, and the wearing of white garments. This was the birth of the Celestial Church of Christ — "Ijo Mimo ti Kristi lati Orun wa."
Pastor-Founder Oshoffa was not a trained theologian. He was a simple, humble man whom God chose to demonstrate that His power is made perfect in weakness. Through prayer, fasting, and unwavering obedience to divine instruction, Oshoffa built a church that today has millions of members across every continent.
The tenets and practices of the CCC — barefoot worship, the seven-branched candlestick on the altar, the use of holy water and incense, prophetic ministry, and the observance of special services like the New Moon and Mercy Day — all came through divine revelation to the Pastor-Founder.
Pastor-Founder Oshoffa's life was marked by miracles. The sick were healed, the barren were blessed with children, and the spiritually oppressed were delivered through his ministry. He demonstrated that Christianity is not merely a religion of words but a living, breathing encounter with the power of God.
He passed into glory on September 10, 1985, but his legacy lives on in every Celestial parish around the world. Here at Goshen Cathedral, the Arch Diocese of Canada National Headquarter, we continue to uphold the tenets and doctrines that the Pastor-Founder received from heaven.
As we remember him, let us rededicate ourselves to the vision he was given: a church of prayer, holiness, prophecy, and divine power. May we be found faithful stewards of this heavenly inheritance.
"The righteous shall be in everlasting remembrance." — Psalm 112:6
