The Significance of the White Garment (Sutana) in Celestial Worship
VSE Kunle Lawal · February 20, 2026
The white garment, known as the Sutana, is one of the most recognisable aspects of the Celestial Church of Christ. Far from being mere tradition, the Sutana carries deep spiritual significance rooted in scripture and divine revelation.
When the Celestial Church of Christ was founded by the late Rev. Pastor-Founder Samuel Bilewu Joseph Oshoffa in 1947, the instruction to worship in white garments came through divine revelation. This instruction finds its foundation in several passages of the Holy Bible.
In the Book of Revelation 7:9, the Apostle John describes a vision: "After this I beheld, and, lo, a great multitude, which no man could number, of all nations, and kindreds, and people, and tongues, stood before the throne, and before the Lamb, clothed with white robes, and palms in their hands." This powerful image of heavenly worship in white garments affirms the practice that CCC members observe every time they gather for worship.
The colour white symbolises purity, holiness, and our heavenly citizenship. When we put on the Sutana, we are reminded that we are called to be holy, set apart for God's purpose. It is an outward expression of an inward commitment to walk in righteousness.
Additionally, the white garment creates a sense of equality among worshippers. Regardless of social status, profession, or earthly rank, every member stands before God in the same white robe. This reflects the spiritual truth that we are all equal in God's sight.
The Sutana also serves as a spiritual covering during worship. Celestial members believe that the white garment, when consecrated, offers spiritual protection and creates a sacred atmosphere conducive to prayer, prophecy, and communion with the Holy Spirit.
As members of CCC Goshen Cathedral, let us wear our Sutana with pride and understanding, knowing that it is not merely a uniform but a garment of praise, a robe of righteousness, and a symbol of our heavenly calling.
May God continue to bless our parish and deepen our understanding of the tenets and doctrines of our beloved Church.
